Craft Akron Sewing Series Classes and
Stitch Series Classes are created to give you skills and techniques and they build on each other so you gain confidence using your skills. These classes are offered at several different times a month so there should be one to fit your schedule.
The Sewing Series classes are on Tuesday’s at 12pm, Thursday’s 6pm and Saturdays at 10am. The fourth class is a Wild Card workshop, something different each time.
If you would like to use one of our machines for class let us know at time of registration. If you plan on bringing along your machine make sure it is in good working condition and you are confident sewing on it. Don’t forget the power cord, foot pedal and manual!
If the class askes for them, please bring along *Basic Sewing Notions including: a pair of good fabric scissors, tape measure, seam ripper, straight pins and a pin cushion, machine and hand sewing needles, a marking tool and paper and pencil.

Zentangle™ Level 1 – Deborah Phelps
2 hour class - $35.00 - $10 kit fee due at time of class
Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is an abstract form; it has no up or down and there are no artistic skills needed. Zentangle provides artistic satisfaction and an increased sense of personal well being. Learn the basic philosophy behind Zentangle, understand the steps to creating a Zentangle tile and create 2 complete Zentangle tiles to take with you.
Supplies – mini-kit is part of the kit fee including Sakura micron 01 pigment pen-black, pencil, sharpener and 4 Zentangle tiles.

Zentangle™ Level 2 – Deborah Phelps

bring in the tiles you created in level 1 class and learn to shade your tiles. Create 2 new tiles with more new tangles, and find out a fun way to implement the meditative process.

Checkerboard Scarf – Jenna Raus
3 hours - $30.00
Join fiber artist Jenna Raus in learning to make a checkerboard scarf out of re-purposed pillowcases. You will learn basic hand sewing skills and create a beautifully handmade scarf that you will love to wear or give.
Supplies – 2 old pillowcases (color and pattern of your choice) and a pair of fabric scissors. Needles and threads are part of the class fee

Printing & Painting on Fabric – Art Quilter Connie Bloom
3 hours - $25.00
Textile paints bring new life to boring, outdated or plain fabrics that no longer inspire you. Use old potato mashers, sink mats, brayers, paper towel cores and deeply cut stamps to make entirely new cloth to use in your quilts or in projects around the house. Use a dental syringe to write across the surface! PFD fabric can be used but is not absolutely necessary. Solid colors look spectacular when over painted. If you start with fabric you hate, it can only get better. Bring a mix to test the waters.
Supplies - Bring an assortment of textile paints that can be mixed with water or purchase a kit from Craft Akron. You will also need 2 yards cloth, an apron or old shirt. several different sizes of foam brushes, a brayer, 6-12 plastic “paper” plates, 6-12 stir sticks, recycled yogurt or small plastic cups, a pair of scissors. Bring things from home to “ink” up to make prints -- the bottom of an old sneaker, for example, to use and share with your classmates.

Needle Felted Jewelry- Devona Brazier

Are you as excited about felted wool as we are? Spend an afternoon designing amazing jewelry with wool roving and a special needle. We'll cover basic techniques to give your creative eye the freedom to design a one-of-a-kind piece.
All supplies are included in the kit fee.

TWO HOUR Skirt – Cindi Kube-Polovick, certified sewing instructor

A great little fitted skirt you’ll wear over and over. There isn’t a pattern; you will use your measurements to achieve a perfect fit in just 2 hours. You will want to make this one again!
Supplies – One yard of 60” medium to heavy weight knit fabric, thread to match, 2 yards of 1” non-roll elastic, 80/12 BALL POINT machine needles, Basic Sewing Notions*. Your machine or ours.

Pocket Valance - Martha Lombardi - Advanced Beginner
Three hours $35.00
If you want to make a room feel warmer just add some fabric. Take a one yard piece of your favorite fabric and make a valance for the top of a window from 30” to 40” wide.
Supplies - one yard of fabric with thread to match & a curtain rod to fit the length of your window (Call Martha and discuss design details) Basic Sewing Supplies*. Your machine or ours.

Circle Art Quilts – Connie Bloom
2- 2 hour classes - $45.00
It’s recommended that you begin by taking Connie’s Printing and Painting on Fabric class on March 27, but not required. Bring your hand painted fabrics, if you have them, and solid color fabrics to make a small original art quilt using the age old symbol of eternity, the circle. Bring several choices of black and white prints for accents. Geometric prints work well. You will be hand cutting and designing circle blocks and making a small finished piece. Hand stitchers can adapt this quilt to their techniques.
Supplies - Bring an assortment of large scraps of solid colored fabrics that look good together. Also any hand printed/painted or hand-dyed fabrics you may have along with 2 black and white prints. You will not need a lot of any single color. Also, bring ½ yard of black OR black-on -black print fabric. 2 yards of fusible web, 1 yard of fusible stabilizer, good scissors ½ yard of black or white batting (black preferred), black thread, your sewing machine and a size 90 topstitch needle.
Hand stitchers will need ½ yard of crinoline instead of the stabilizer and should bring an assortment of perle cotton thread and appropriate needles for hand stitching.

Cement Leaf Painting- Jean Powell
2 hours - $38.00
In this fun class you paint a cement sand casted leaf that you can display in your home or garden, use as a bowl, bird bath or feeder, even a fountain. Choose a leaf between 13-16” long and approximately 11” wide depending on the type of leaf. We will use sunflower, hosta, and elephant ears among others. Acrylic paints are provided in various colors including metallics. The finished product is sprayed with a glaze after the class and the leaf can be picked up the following week. It is so much fun to start with a “piece” of cement and as you add layers of paint it suddenly becomes a work of art.
Supplies – all materials are part of the class fee including the cement leaf, paints and brushes.

Jammie Pants – Cindi Kube-Polovick certified sewing instructor

Sew your own personalized pajama bottoms while learning how to read and follow a pattern, understand the nap of the fabric to lay out and cut the pieces. Use our serger at the studio to finish the seams and in no time you will have a great fitting pair of jammie pants.
Supplies – Pajama Pattern is available at Craft Akron at time of registration (included in the price of the class), 100% pre-washed cotton fabric and elastic as stated on the pattern, thread to match, a Bodkin or Safety Pin to thread the elastic, a small ruler or seam gauge and Basic Sewing Notions *. PMC Pendant & Earrings- Jennifer Cabic
4 hours - $25.00 - $30.00 kit fee due at time of class
Learn basic techniques for making fine silver earrings & a pendant. PMC is a material made from particles of fine silver, binder and water, when fired it results in .999 fine silver. In class you will make a pendant and 1 - 2 pairs of earrings.
Supplies – all materials are include in the kit fee and consist of a 16g pack of PMC3, use of all tools and kiln time. Bring a sack lunch, we’ll take a break

Sterling Silverware Garden Art- Megan Kunkler
1 ½ hours, $25.00 - $5.00 kit fee due at time of class
Planning for your garden this spring? Do you have old silverware? Join us in making garden art out of silver spoons and knives. You’ll learn basic metal working techniques while making use of those silverware odds and ends. Your garden has never seen such fashion!
Supplies – tools included in kit fee, bring along your old or odd pieces of sterling silverware (spoons and knives especially). We have many pieces of silverware to chose from here at Craft Akron.

Felted Flowers- Heather Quinones
3 hours - $30.00
Using soap, a couple of turns of the fingers, and poof! You have a small felted flower. We will use black and white wool to practice with before moving onto colored fiber. You will walk out of the class with 3-4 finished flower pieces. Depending on what you would like these could be pins, large or small barrettes, or let your imagination be the limit!
Supplies – all materials are included in the cost of the class including leicaster and colored wool, written instructions, findings, needles and thread

Buttercup Bag- Devona Brazier -Intermediate Sewing
One 2 hour and one 3 hour class- $40.00
This simple handbag is a great project for learning to make a handbag. It is designed by Rae Hoekstra, the pattern is included in the class fee. This is a two part class. Friday night we construct the bag exterior and Saturday we line and finish the bag. Be sure you can attend both days!
Supplies - Two fat quarters of complimentary fabric - one for the bag outer, and one for the bag lining. Matching thread, a small piece of stabilizing interfacing, two decorative buttons and one magnetic closure. Your machine or ours.

Memory Quilts: Connie Bloom
2 - 3 hour classes - $45.00
Art quilts are the perfect surface for a swatch of your late granny’s favorite dress and other objects with sentimental value, from a lock of hair to a twig from the garden. Bring an assortment of meaningful cotton fabrics, small photo transfers of your favorite people (you can make them at home or contact Craft Akron for use of the studio’s equipment) and buttons from your a shirt to add to the surface. You will be learning the principles of design and will design your own quilt in this class. Objects must be smallish and lightweight to add to the surface of the quilt. Experienced quilters may use silks and fancy fabrics provided they are stabilized before class. Connie will have a tool to drill holes into small plastic and wood objects so they can be sewn to the quilt.
Supplies – ½ yard of black cotton fabric, sentimental cotton fabrics from home, 2 yards of Wonder Under or other fusible web, ½ yard of batting, ½ yard of leave-in interfacing, fabric for the back of the quilt, sentimental objects to sew on to the surface of the quilt, a can of spray adhesive designed to be used on fabric. You will need your sewing machine and thread. Hand stitchers will need ½ yard of crinoline instead of the interfacing and should bring an assortment of perle cotton thread and appropriate needles for hand stitching.

Zentangle Level 1 required.
Zendalas are a hybrid of a Mandala Circle and Zentangle Art. Basic Mandala information is introduced during this class. Create new tangles, learn to build your own Mandala and how to tangle a pre-made Mandala.

Hem a pair of Dress Pants – Cindi Kube-Polovick, certified sewing instructor

Don’t use that sticky tape to hem your pants again! Learn the best way to create a hem and get that professional look. Bring in your pants and we will measure during class.
Supplies – your too long pants, a good pair of fabric scissors, hand needles, thread to match your pants in color and content (polyester or cotton) and a tape measure.

Learn to dye or paint a skein of yarn or a yard of fabric- Martha Lombardi
2 hours - $45.00
Play with color and create your own hand-dyed yarn or fabric. We'll talk about color ways and the best way to apply color to get stellar results. You will learn about the different dyes and paints and their applicaltion.
Supplies – all are part of the cost of the class including a blank skein of wool yarn or one yard of fabric, dye or paint and tools.

Flower Pin Cushion- Devona Brazier - Advanced Beginner
2 hours - $20.00 - $4.00 kit fee due at time of class
What is sewing on the bias? It's an important technique that has many design applications. At the end of this class you will bring home an adorable hand stitched flower shaped pin cushion- the perfect spring time gift for any crafter!
Supplies - Two fat quarters of complimentary quilting cotton. Thread, needle and a decorative button to match.
Kit fee includes polyfil and a magnetic button.

Spring Woolies- Heather Quinones

Experienced and new hand sewers are welcome to this class. We will use some basic stitches to create a spring inspired wall hanging, small pillow, or case for your cell phone/ipod. The sky is the limit! There will be designs and patterns to start your imaginations off in creating your pieces.
Supplies – all materials are part of the cost of the class including recycled wool clothes, thread, needles, written instructions, and assistance with designs. Bring along a sack dinner.

Fun Felted Shoulder Bags - Lynn Shoup

Wet felt a seamless shoulder bag, including a sturdy strap and closure, using a resist and centuries-old methods. Discover 3-D felting magic and learn techniques that can be applied to countless other projects.
Supplies – supplies are part of the kit fee including wool, rolling mat or bubble wrap, instructions, and pattern. You can bring along a large tray with sides, a favorite button and small pieces of embellishment yarn if you have them. Please wear old clothes, we'll be getting wet.

Garden Harvest Apron- Devona Brazier - Advanced Beginner

How many times have you fumbled with a handful of garden tools on your way to begin your planting? How many times have you been out in the garden and forgotten to bring a basket with you to carry in your delicious crop? This apron will be your answer to both of these problems! Fold it up and you have a helpful pouch. Wear it down and it has two utility loops for your tools. Pattern is included.

Stitch Series
Drop Spindling- Heather Quinones

Come and join Heather Quinones for a relaxing evening learning the art of creating your yarn with a drop spindle. You will be working with Jacob wool and Border Liecaster wool. The class will show you how to prepare the wool for spinning, use a drop spindle, and how to ply your new yarn. At the end of the class you will walk out with a drop spindle, will, written instructions, and possibly a new addiction to a new craft.

Open Knitting with Joan Braseasmle

Need some knitting help? Have a question or don’t know where to start? Seasoned Knitter Joan has the answer. Come, sit down with a cup of tea and Joan will help you get back to finishing that project, or even give you answers on how to start a new one. No more UFO’s!!!!

Spinning Wheel Classes- Heather Quinones
One on One, call Craft Akron to schedule - $25.00/hr

Spinning wheels are relaxing way to create specialty yarns with most types of fiber. Classes are designed based on your skill level. For beginner you will learn how to prepare your fiber for spinning, start to get a feel for the use of a spinning wheel, and have a small ball of yarn to show off for your work. For intermediate we go into plying of the yarn, adding inclusions (sparkles and yarn bits), and using some specialty fibers. We can arrange advance classes based on what you would like to learn. There are 2 wheels for class use, but if you have your own you are encouraged to bring it along. These classes are typically one on one, but I can accommodate 2 people.

Baggy Bag BAG - Martha Lombardi advanced beginner
2 – two hour classes $35.00
We don’t even use those plastic grocery bags but they still multiply under the sink, now here’s a use for them. Make a darling bag perfect for the beach, shower or pool. Learn the knitted cast on, a joggles jog and how to cut a continuous strip with a rotary cutter.
Supplies - a 16” circular needle size 6, 7 or 8 and 20 to 30 plastic bags. Pattern included in the class

Basic Knitted Sock - Martha Lombardi
3-2 hour classes - $50.00
What’s all the fuss about knitting a pair of socks? Once you slip on a sock that is made just for you, you’ll understand! Learn the basics of sock knitting, stretchy cast on, turning a heel, creating a gusset and finishing with the kitchener stitch. Learn techniques you will use over and over in other knitting and make a pair of warm slipper socks. Pattern included with class.
Supplies: approx 400 yds of worsted weight yarn with a bit of nylon for stretch, tapestry needle, scissors, set of 5 Double Pointed Needles - size 4 to 7. This Pattern is for a basic medium sized sock; use a smaller or larger set of needles to adjust the finished sock size.

Learn Foundation Paper Piece Quilting Advanced Beginner

No more fussy cutting to make a perfect point, use the paper piecing method to save on frustration and time. We’ll make 4 squares and quilt them together to make a darling little pillow.
Supplies – approx ¼ yard each of at least 4 different coordinating 100% cotton pre washed fabrics, with an extra ½ yard for the back of the pillow, a 12”x12” pillow form, thread to match and Basic Sewing Supplies*. Your machine or ours.

If you’ve never used a sewing machine but want to learn, this is the class for you. We will go over the basics of how the machine works. Learn to thread, wind bobbins, adjust settings and make a cute stitched note card. This class is for our machines only. If you’d like to learn to use your own machine call us and we’ll schedule a private lesson.

Beginning Machine Sewing- Martha Lombardi

Have you used a sewing machine, know how to thread and sew? Maybe you’ve made a few simple things but you want to take your skills to a higher level. Gain more confidence; learn pinning, gathering, cutting and ironing skills along with pivoting and finishing. Make a cute apron using your newfound skills. Pattern is included with class fee.
